Affordable anti aging skin care

budget-skin-careRecent research on consumer behavior after the credit crunch apparently shows that one thing women generally don’t cut down on is their spending on skin care.

Seems like we value the way good anti aging skin care makes us feel and we are reluctant to stop buying it – even when we are really pushed for cash.

Compared to some of the big budget items in the family finances the cost of most skin care items is very small and using face creams and lotions makes us feel good for a comparatively small outlay.

What does happen though is that we make some small adjustments to the total amount we spend – we may combine a couple of products into one or buy a less expensive item rather than a truly luxury alternative.

So – what if you feel you need to make some bigger adjustments but still want to keep up a good anti aging skin care regimen – can you still do it with less to spend.

Well the good news is that there are some excellent products available at very reasonable prices. Manufacturers are increasingly selling anti aging products at much more affordable prices knowing that accessible pricing means more sales and more profit in the long run.

But how do you find the skin care that delivers great results at an affordable cost.

It might be a surprise to know that with a budget of around $150 you can get most of what you need to keep your skin looking good. If you think $150 is a lot in one go – remember chances are you will buy the items over time as your existing products run out – so the money isn’t all going at once.

To keep to a tight budget for anti aging skin care – you need to follow a few golden rules to do it:

  • Combine your products- for instance – buy a cleanser that also acts as a toner and a daily moisturizer that doubles as a night cream
  • Limit yourself to four products for your basic skin care routine – a combined cleanser/toner, an all purpose anti aging moisturizer, an eye cream and an exfoliator
  • Buy online so you can get special offers and guaranteed prices plus the advantage of returns if needed. Buy all the items at once and take advantage of free delivery.
  • Double up and save – once you know a product works – many online stores offer better prices for 2 or even 3 products at a time. Or they give additional gifts and samples with multiple buys
  • Stick to affordable skin care brands with excellent reputations – Philosophy, Boots No7, Olay, L’Oreal and there are many others

And if you don’t believe it’s possible judge for yourself – I gave myself $150 total spend and here’s what I came up with:

Step One – Cleanser-Toner:I chose Philosophy Purity Made Simple. Dissolves dirt and make up debris (including eye make up) and leaves your skin ultra soft and deeply clean with minimum fuss. The product gets rave reviews on all the forums I’ve looked at.  It won’t break the bank and there is a big economy size which one user recommends to leave in the shower for all the family!

Step Two – Moisturizer: Philosophy Hope in a Jar hits the mark in this category.   Coming in at $35 this world-famous, high spec anti aging cream is great value. Beta glucan is the chief active ingredient – a powerful antioxidant, which works with the lactic acid (fruit acids) to give you greater radiance and softness. 159 reviewers and counting on Amazon with some ecstatic comments from long time addicts reporting younger looking, glowing skin.

For a little more you can get a day cream and a separate night cream from the Boots No7 line.  Boots Protect and Perfect Night Cream is a velvety smooth cream and the day version comes with a broad spectrum SPF 15.  Uses the same retinol and peptide complex as the original serum.

Step Three – Eye Cream: an effective eye cream is a must-have for the more delicate skin around the eyes. My top choice here has to be Boots No7 Time Resisting Day and Night Eye Care which is two separate products in a double dispenser for a fantastic price.  The day gel cools and soothes puffiness while the nourishing night cream uses pro-retinol to reduce wrinkling around your eyes.  Both are fragrance free.

Step Four – Exfoliate: an essential step at least twice a week to slough off dead skin cells and allow key anti aging ingredients to get to work quickly. NuCelle Papaya Skin Exfoliator can be used daily as it is a gentle exfoliant for mature and dry skin.  Enriched with apricot kernel oil, glycerin and walnut shell powder to leave skin clear, radiant and soft as a baby. Restores glow, helps erase sun damage and – most importantly for 40+ skin – hydrates and all this for only a few dollars.

There you have it. You can get all the products you need for a complete four step regimen for under $150 and don’t forget that all these products will last several months at least so the daily or weekly cost is really good value.

So it can be done – you can have excellent anti aging skin care at an affordable price and be well on the way to younger looking skin without breaking the bank!

  1. What do you think about the Arbonne products?

    • Thanks for your question – I haven’t used Arbonne myself but I have seen many comments and reviews online. My view is that it is really a multi level marketing business – without commenting on the products themselves – Arbonne make money by getting consultants to set up sites and sell their products but they make a lot of money from their consultants also. I think there are much better anti aging skin care products out there at a reasonable price which are developed, produced and marketed by experts in the skin care business.

  2. Very informative review. I really appreciate how ways were laid. Very interesting.

    • Debra – thanks for the comment – there are a lot of less expensive skin care products out there but it takes a bit of searching to find the good ones – glad you found it useful!
