Susan Sarandon - fabulous at 59…

From “Rocky Horror Picture Show” to “Bull Durham” and “Dead Man Walking,” Susan Sarandon is one woman that doesn’t let her age define her or limit her.  But with a career in the movie business, where looks matter, you would think that this 59 year old woman might be pushed aside for younger actresses.  However, Susan Sarandon knows just what she needs to do to keep up.

What Susan really does..

While you might think that Susan Sarandon has succumbed to the pressures of Hollywood and injected herself with Botox or had plastic surgery, she chose a more natural approach in keeping with her beliefs and values.

Eating right for great looking skin and hair..

Sarandon focuses on eating properly, including many fruits and vegetables as well as lean meats.  She also includes a green foods supplement into her diet, which adds even more of an antioxidant punch.  "My emphasis is on being healthy … rather than what you inject or reconstruct. Beauty comes from inside — it has to do with what you take in."  By eating a diet replete with antioxidants the actress stays healthy and sexy.

A former vegetarian, Susan Sarandon admits she got bored with the meatless lifestyle. "I still don't eat a huge amount of red meat," she has said "I can't eat as many carbs as I used to, but I've never been able to do anything as severe as the Atkins diet."  

After menopause hit at around age 54, she had to cut back on her intake of carbohydrates as her metabolism changed and she found herself piling on the pounds around the middle.  When she does indulge, she chooses whole-grain products over refined grains such as white bread and pasta.

As part of her daily routine, Sarandon includes a calcium and vitamin D supplement as well as emu oil, vitamin C, and coenzyme Q-10 to boost brain power and vitality. 

One thing Susan Sarandon makes sure she does is to look after her skin.  Blessed with fine, even textured skin, Sarandon makes sure she keeps it that way by getting regular non-invasive treatments. 

She's a big fan of Tracie Martyn - along with most of Hollywood - and is a regular for Tracie Martyn's Resculpting Facials at her Manhattan salon.

It was actually Susan Sarandon who persuaded Martyn to create her own line of anti aging products so that she and other Hollywood celebrities could use them at home after salon facials. Although she regularly uses the whole product range, her particular favorites are the Enzyme Exfoliant and the Firming Serum.

With a strong sense of her beliefs, Sarandon’s volunteerism and political activism seems to add to her overall glow and radiance.  By taking up causes that she firmly believes in, she creates the right inner energy to allow her body to age at a much slower rate.

She also believes that caring and laughing are the best anti-aging medicine stating simply - "Anything that makes you feel passionate and makes you laugh helps you to stay young."

Exercise a key to managing stress.. 

Susan also includes regular exercise in her life to remove any pent up stress or tension that she might be holding onto.  Even with her busy schedule and high visibility as an A-list celebrity, she tries to get on the treadmill as often as she can. 

She goes to her gym regularly and has a personal trainer to put her through her paces and make the exercise times fun: "We use exercise balls or play catch with a heavy ball, as opposed to just getting on machines."

Sarandon is also a big fan of Pilates which she does whenever she can.  She says that she tried yoga in the past - although a little unsuccessfully which she explains by saying she was too competitive and tried to push herself to do too much - getting hurt in the process.

Taking time to breathe..

With deep breathing and visualization, Susan Sarandon is also able to keep her body moving at a slower pace, which can also help with the reduction of the signs of aging.  When the body is calm, it can process toxins more efficiently, allowing for better skin and less collagen breakdown.

Though she has been known to smoke for a movie role, Sarandon hasn’t had to battle the smoking addiction.  This simple life choice has lessened the possible appearance of aging lines as well as kept her healthy.

Although Sarandon does have regular microdermabrasion done to keep her skin smooth, she has not tried Botox and does not plan to in the future.  Fear of losing her emotional range is her first concern, but losing the natural appearance of her face is another.  Of course, she does admit that it’s getting tempting around her neck. Only time will tell.
