DMAE: rejuvenate your skin and your brain

dmae-brain-skin-rejuvenationDMAE has been the subject of quite a bit of research in recent years – and most of the studies focused on the role DMAE plays in speeding up brain function.

Even more interesting for those of us keen on looking younger as we age – DMAE has been identified as one of a very few ingredients in anti aging skin care which can lift and firm skin.

But what is DMAE and should you consider adding it to your anti aging supplement list?

DMAE is an amino alcohol which although only present in tiny amounts in your brain – has a huge impact on its power and function. It is generally regarded as a precursor to choline, which is needed by your brain to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Neurotransmitters are vital for nerve signal transmission and healthy brain function. The faster and more efficiently the neurotransmitters work in your brain the better – concentration and speed of reaction and thought depend upon it. The more DMAE you have the better and quicker your brain will work.

DMAE is found in abundance in fish – especially salmon, sardines and pilchards. The best sources are wild rather than farmed fish – Alaskan or Scottish wild salmon being particularly good. If you can’t find that – the tinned or frozen alternative will work just as well.

DMAE was first used in the 1950’s as a supplement to treat attention defecit disorder in children. Later research focused on its role in improving mental sharpness and short term memory in older people. In recent years studies have shown that DMAE applied topically as a gel or cream has a significant lifting and tightening effect on the skin and can reduce or remove age spots.

DMAE has been shown to cross the blood-brain barrier faster than choline – improving the rate of cell repair. The decline of cell membranes is likely to be one of the most important cause of aging. So, it’s these qualities that make DMAE such an important anti aging supplement – both for brain function and skin aging.

Apart from it’s ability to speed up and improve brain function – DMAE has powerful anti-inflammatory properties which have given rise to it’s topical use as an anti aging ingredient in skin care.

No recommended daily allowances are set for DMAE. The most common dosages are 100mg and 300mg – taking around 300mg of DMAE per day seems to bring the most benefits.

DMAE supplements should be taken with water after food – earlier in the day rather than late at night. Taking the supplement late at night may result in restlessness and insomnia because of the mild “buzz” experienced by the brain. Continued use should allow the body to adjust.

If you have epilepsy or bipolar disorder DMAE is not recommended. For most people – assuming you are fit and healthy – there should be no side effects – only great benefits.
